Chapter 5: The First Crack
Derek refused to leave.
Even after Officer Ramirez warned him to stay calm, he kept staring at Caleb like he wanted to kill him.
Vanessa finally climbed out of the pool, soaking wet and shaking. She tried to cover herself with her hands, but there was nothing left to hide.
Derek looked at her with pure disgust.
“You’ve been sleeping with him?” he asked. “In their pool? While I’m at work?”
Vanessa started sobbing.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this,” she said. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”
Derek turned to me.
“Marissa,” he said, his voice rough. “I had no idea. I swear to God, I didn’t know.”
I believed him.
Derek had always seemed like a decent man. A little quiet, but polite. He worked long hours as an engineer and rarely joined neighborhood events. I had never suspected that his wife was spending her free time in my husband’s arms.
“I know,” I told him quietly.
Caleb tried to speak again.
“Marissa, can we please go inside and talk? This doesn’t have to be public.”
I looked at him.
The man I had been married to for twelve years was standing naked in our backyard, begging me to protect his reputation after he had destroyed mine.
I felt nothing but cold clarity.
“This is already public,” I said. “You made sure of that when you decided to fuck our neighbor five feet from my kitchen.”
Officer Ramirez cleared her throat.
“Ma’am, would you like to press any charges?”
I thought about it.
Then I shook my head.
“No,” I said. “Not yet.”
I looked directly at Caleb.
“But I want them both off my property. Now.”
Caleb’s face went pale.
Vanessa started crying harder.
Derek simply turned and walked back to his car without another word.
As the officers escorted Caleb and Vanessa toward the side gate, I stood there holding their clothes and watched the neighborhood watch my marriage end in real time.
And for the first time in years, I didn’t feel small.
I felt powerful.
