Chapter 13: The Final Judgment

Four months after the twins were born, Daniel accepted a final plea deal.
He pled guilty to domestic violence, fraud, and conspiracy. In exchange, he received a reduced sentence of five years in federal prison and was dishonorably discharged from the Army. He also permanently lost all parental rights to Ethan and Grace.
Evelyn’s case ended with probation, community service, and a significant fine. She was ordered to stay away from me and the children.
On the day the final judgment was handed down, I stood outside the courthouse with my father and Margaret. The sky was overcast, and a light rain was beginning to fall.
Margaret turned to me.
“It’s done,” she said. “Legally, at least.”
I nodded.
Daniel was being led out of the courthouse in handcuffs. He glanced in my direction one last time. Our eyes met briefly. There was no anger left in his face — only exhaustion and regret.
I looked away.
I had no interest in watching his downfall anymore.
My father put his arm around my shoulders.
“Come on,” he said. “Let’s go home.”
As we walked to the car, I felt something shift inside me. The heavy weight I had been carrying for so long finally began to lift.
It wasn’t complete forgiveness. It wasn’t closure in the way movies portrayed it.
