Chapter 4: The Secret Sacrifice

Arthur and Linda Hayes were proud people. They had lived in their house for forty years. It was more than just a building to them — it was their legacy, the place where they raised their children and hosted every holiday.
When they told us the bank was going to foreclose, Daniel panicked. He tried everything — asking relatives for loans, trying to negotiate with the bank, even considering selling some of their belongings. Nothing worked.
I watched him grow more desperate by the day.
One night, after he had drunk too much, he looked at me and said something that broke whatever was left between us.
“If we lose that house, it’s your fault,” he muttered. “You never contribute anything real. Vanessa would have found a way to fix this.”
That was the night I decided to save the house.
I didn’t do it for Daniel. I did it for Arthur and Linda. They had never been cruel to me the way Daniel and Vanessa were. They were just old and proud and scared of losing everything.
Using my maiden name and the private LLC I controlled, I contacted the bank and purchased the property outright. I made sure every document was signed under Claire Bennett. I paid in cash from accounts Daniel didn’t know existed.
I never told anyone.
When the foreclosure was suddenly stopped and the house was saved, Daniel assumed Vanessa had used her family connections to make it happen. Arthur and Linda were so grateful they threw a small celebration in her honor.
I stood in the corner of their living room that night, watching Vanessa accept everyone’s thanks with a modest smile, and felt something inside me go completely still.
I had paid for the house.
I had saved their home.
And they were thanking another woman for it.
That night, when we got home, Daniel didn’t even mention the house. He simply went to bed. I stood in the dark kitchen for a long time, staring at nothing.
