Chapter 8: The Quiet Before the Storm

The next two days passed in a strange, suspended state.

I was discharged from the hospital with the twins. A kind nurse helped me get everything into the car. I drove carefully back to the house I had once shared with Daniel. It felt cold and unfamiliar now.

I didn’t stay long. I only packed what I needed for myself and the babies, then left. I had already arranged to stay at a secure, short-term rental arranged by Major Thompson’s team.

Daniel tried to contact me multiple times. I ignored every call and message. When he showed up at the hospital the day after I was discharged, security turned him away because of the temporary protective order I had filed.

On the third day, I woke up early.

I fed the twins, dressed them in simple white outfits, and got myself ready. I didn’t wear anything dramatic — just a simple black blouse and slacks. But I did put on my dog tags. They rested against my chest beneath my shirt, hidden but present.

At exactly 2:00 p.m., my phone rang.

It was Major Thompson.

“We’re five minutes out,” he said. “Are you ready, Colonel?”

I looked at myself in the mirror one last time.

“I’m ready,” I said.

I picked up Ethan’s car seat with one hand and Grace’s with the other, then walked outside.

Waiting for me on the street were three military vehicles and two police cruisers. Several soldiers in full dress uniform stood at attention. Major Thompson was there, along with two other senior officers I recognized from my old unit. Detective Reyes was also present, along with two other detectives.

They all turned when I walked out.

Major Thompson saluted me.

“Colonel Bennett,” he said formally. “We’re ready when you are.”

I returned the salute.

“Thank you,” I said. “Let’s go.”

We drove in a small convoy toward the Hayes family home. As we got closer, I could feel my heartbeat steadying. The fear I had carried for so long was gone.

All that remained was cold, clear purpose.
