Chapter 2: The Woman They Underestimated

Three years earlier, I had been someone else.

Before I became Claire Hayes, I was Colonel Claire Bennett. I had spent twelve years in the United States Army, most of them in intelligence and special operations. My work was classified. Very few people outside my unit knew what I actually did or how high my rank truly was.

When I met Daniel Hayes at a charity event in Hartford, I was on a rare period of leave. He was charming, well-dressed, and came from a respectable family. He didn’t ask too many questions about my job, and I didn’t volunteer much. I told him I worked for the government in a quiet administrative role. He seemed satisfied with that answer.

We married after eight months.

At the time, I thought I wanted a normal life. I wanted a husband, a home, and eventually children. I was tired of deployments, of secrets, of constantly looking over my shoulder. I thought Daniel could give me that.

I was wrong.

Daniel came from a family that valued appearances above everything else. His parents, Arthur and Linda, expected their son to marry someone who could elevate their social standing. They tolerated me because I was polite and quiet, but they never truly accepted me.

The first few months of our marriage were bearable. Then Daniel’s parents ran into financial trouble. Their house — the one they had lived in for over forty years — was at risk of foreclosure. Daniel was desperate. He asked me for help, but I didn’t have that kind of money readily available.

So I used my own resources.

Using my maiden name and a private LLC I had created years earlier for security reasons, I purchased the property before the bank could finalize the foreclosure. I paid in full. Every document was signed under Claire Bennett, not Claire Hayes. Daniel and his parents never knew it was me.

I never told them.

I didn’t do it for recognition. I did it because I still believed in family back then. I thought if I saved their home, maybe they would finally accept me.

Instead, they gave all the credit to Vanessa Reed.

Vanessa was Daniel’s high school sweetheart who had reappeared in our lives about a year into our marriage. She was beautiful, well-connected, and knew exactly how to flatter Arthur and Linda. When the house was saved, Daniel told everyone that Vanessa had “stepped up” and used her family’s influence to help.

I stayed silent.

I let them believe the lie.

Because by then, I had already started to see who Daniel really was.
