Chapter 3: The Slow Unraveling

The first time Daniel raised his voice at me, I told myself it was stress.

The first time he grabbed my arm during an argument, I told myself it was an accident.

The first time he told me I was “lucky” he married me because no one else would want a woman who “did nothing important,” I told myself he was just venting.

I kept making excuses.

Meanwhile, Vanessa became a permanent fixture in our lives. She came to family dinners. She helped Linda with events. She smiled sweetly at me in public and looked at Daniel like he belonged to her.

Daniel never defended me.

Instead, he started comparing us.

“Vanessa actually contributes something,” he would say. “She has connections. She knows how to handle herself in important circles. What do you do, Claire? Sit at home and pretend to work?”

I never corrected him about my job. I never told him about my rank or my years of service. A part of me still hoped that if I stayed quiet and patient, he would eventually see my worth.

But he never did.

The night I found out I was pregnant with twins, I thought things might change. I thought becoming a father would make him more responsible, more present.

I was wrong.

When I told him, he stared at me for a long moment before saying, “Are you sure they’re mine?”

That was the moment something inside me began to die.

From then on, I started protecting myself in small ways. I opened a separate bank account. I kept copies of important documents. I started saving messages and recording conversations when I felt unsafe.

I didn’t plan to leave.

Not yet.

But I was preparing, just in case.

Then my father’s house went into foreclosure, and everything changed.
