Chapter 13: The New Normal

A year after I returned from Tampa, our life had settled into something beautiful and ordinary.

Felix was doing well in school. He had friends. He laughed easily. My parents had their own routines—my mother in the garden, my father fixing things around the house. I had a steady job at the local clinic that let me be home every evening.

The house no longer felt like the place Russell had shared with Jessica. It felt like ours. The walls held our memories now—Felix’s drawings on the refrigerator, my mother’s plants on the windowsills, my father’s tools in the garage.

One evening Felix climbed into my lap on the porch and asked the question I had been waiting for.

“Mommy, why did Daddy leave us?”

I held him close and told him the truth in the simplest words I could find.

“Daddy made choices that hurt our family. He chose someone else and forgot to choose us. That doesn’t mean we’re not lovable. It means he made a mistake.”

Felix thought about that for a long time.

“I like it here with you and Nana and Papa.”

May you like

I kissed the top of his head.

“I like it here too.”
