Chapter 8: Felix’s Question

Felix asked the hardest question on a quiet Saturday afternoon.
We were in the backyard planting flowers. He looked up at me with dirt on his cheeks and said, “Why did Daddy stop loving us?”
I knelt down and wiped the dirt from his face.
“Daddy made choices that hurt us,” I said. “He chose someone else and forgot to choose us. That doesn’t mean we’re not lovable. It means he made a mistake.”
Felix thought about that for a long time.
“Will he come back?”
I shook my head.
“Not the way he was. But you have me, Nana, and Papa. That’s a whole family right here.”

He nodded and went back to digging in the dirt. Later that evening he drew a picture of our house with four stick figures holding hands. I hung it on the refrigerator where we could all see it every day.
The house was no longer the one Russell had lived in with Jessica. It was the one where my son planted flowers and my parents drank coffee on the porch and I came home every night.
