Chapter 4: The Leverage

The restraining order changed the tone of every conversation.

My mother tried to go through other relatives at first. My aunt called to tell me I was being dramatic and that family forgave family. I sent her the police report and the voicemail. She stopped calling.

Kelsey tried a different approach. She showed up at Willa’s school during pickup, claiming she had permission. The school, already notified of the order, called me immediately. I arrived to find Kelsey arguing with the principal. She left when the police were mentioned.

I changed Willa’s school the following week to one farther away with better security protocols. The tuition came from the savings I had built while sending money home for five years. Every dollar I had sacrificed was now being used to protect my daughter instead of funding the people who had tried to break her.

My mother left one final voicemail.

“You think you’re better than us because you have money? You’ll regret this when you need us.”

I saved it and added it to the file.

I no longer needed them.
