Chapter 3: The Unfinished Call

On the fifth day my mother left a voicemail that she did not mean for me to hear.
She had called to yell at me again, but the message kept recording after she thought she had hung up. In the background I heard Kelsey’s voice.
“…she thinks she’s better than us now. Cut off the money and see how long she lasts.”
My mother’s reply was clear and cold.
“She’ll come crawling back. She always does. We just need to make sure Willa understands who really loves her. If we have to scare her a little more, so be it. That child is the only leverage we have left.”
The recording ended with the sound of a door closing.
I listened to it three times, then saved it and forwarded it to my attorney.
The next morning I filed for a temporary restraining order against both my mother and my sister, citing emotional abuse of a minor and the 911 call. The judge granted it the same day after reviewing the voicemail, the police report, and the statements from the officers who had responded.
My mother called again that afternoon, screaming into the voicemail.
“You can’t keep us from our granddaughter!”
I saved that message too.
Willa asked me that night why Grandma couldn’t come over anymore. I told her the truth in the simplest words I could find.
“Grandma made you feel scared and unsafe. That is not okay. So for now, we’re keeping a safe distance until she learns how to be kind.”
Willa thought about that.
“Will she ever learn?”

I hugged her close.
“I don’t know. But we don’t have to wait for her to be happy.”
