Chapter 11: Public Silence, Private War

The trial lasted eleven weeks.

Daniel’s lawyers tried everything—grief-induced temporary insanity, claims that I had fabricated evidence, even an attempt to paint Vanessa as the mastermind. None of it held.

I testified for four hours.

I did not cry on the stand. I did not raise my voice. I simply told the truth, piece by piece, the way I had once explained safety systems to clients who needed to understand exactly how something could fail.

When the jury returned the verdict—guilty on all counts—the courtroom was so quiet I could hear the ticking of the clock on the wall.

Daniel looked at me one last time as they led him away.

I looked back without blinking.
