Chapter 8: The Boardroom Whisper

The emergency board meeting was called for a Tuesday morning.
Daniel arrived early, Vanessa at his side like a well-dressed shadow. He spoke first, voice steady, eyes glistening on cue.
“My wife is unwell. The loss has broken something in her. I am requesting temporary control of her voting shares for the stability of the company.”
Several board members nodded sympathetically.
I waited until he finished.
Then I stood.
“Before any vote is taken,” I said, “I would like the board to hear something.”
I pressed play on the same twelve-second recording.
The room froze.
When it ended, Richard Hale’s face had gone the color of old paper. Vanessa’s hand tightened on Daniel’s arm hard enough to leave marks.
I placed a thick folder on the table.
“Access logs. Gate footage. Insurance documents. Internal emails. Everything is timestamped. Everything is verified. And every single one of you will receive a copy before you leave this room.”
Daniel tried to speak.
I did not let him.
“You called me a bad mother in front of my children’s coffins,” I said quietly. “You hit me. You threatened to kill me. And you murdered them for forty-one percent of a company.”
I looked around the table.
May you like
“Vote however you want. But know that by tomorrow morning the police will have everything you just heard.”
I walked out while the silence was still absolute.
