Chapter 2: The Empty House

I returned to the lake house alone three days after the funeral.

The police tape was gone. The air inside still carried the faint metallic taste of the carbon monoxide that had taken them, though every window had been left open for days. I stood in the doorway of the nursery and let the quiet settle over me like snow.

Emma’s butterfly mobile hung motionless above her empty crib. Ethan’s wooden airplane sat on the shelf exactly where he had left it the last morning he woke up laughing.

I did not cry.

Crying would have been a release. I needed the pressure.

In the study I unlocked the hidden drawer beneath the desk—the one Daniel had never known existed—and pulled out the external hard drive. The logs glowed on the screen in neat, damning lines.

8:17:03 p.m. – System override. User: D.Bennett. Executive code 7749-A.
8:17:11 p.m. – All CO detectors disabled. Battery backup offline.
8:19:44 p.m. – Front door sensor: entry.
8:42:16 p.m. – Emma’s watch audio upload begins.

I played the twelve seconds again.

The man’s voice—Daniel’s partner at the firm, Richard Hale—spoke first.
“Once she is blamed, the company comes to us.”

Vanessa’s voice, soft and eager.
“And the children?”

Daniel, impatient, as if the question bored him.
“They are already asleep.”

I closed the laptop and sat in the dark for a long time, listening to the lake slap against the dock outside. Somewhere in the city Daniel was already moving money, comforting investors, telling the board that his unstable wife had caused an unspeakable tragedy and that he would, of course, take full control of Bennett Safety Systems “for the good of the company.”

He believed the story was finished.

He had no idea the real story had only just begun.
