Chapter 14: Ashes and Lilies

On the second anniversary of their deaths I returned to the cemetery alone.
The lilies I had ordered were already there, white and perfect against the green grass. I sat between the headstones and told them everything—the trial, the verdict, the foundation, the way the lake house still smelled like them sometimes when the wind came from the west.
I told them I had kept the promise.
When I finished, I placed one silver butterfly pin on Emma’s stone and one small wooden airplane on Ethan’s.
