Chapter 10: The Downfall
Over the next month, Caroline’s life continued to fall apart.
Child Protective Services completed their investigation and recommended that Gracie remain with Sawyer permanently. They also recommended that Caroline complete anger management classes and parenting courses before being granted unsupervised visitation.
At the same time, the prosecutor’s office decided to press charges against Caroline for child endangerment and assault.
When she was formally charged, the story made local news. Caroline lost her job as a marketing manager after her employer saw the reports.
She tried reaching out to Sawyer multiple times — through texts, calls, and even showing up at the house unannounced. Each time, he remained firm.
Gracie was in therapy now and slowly starting to heal. She still had nightmares sometimes, but they were becoming less frequent. She smiled more. She laughed more. And she no longer flinched when someone raised their voice.
One evening, after putting Gracie to bed, Sawyer sat on the couch and looked at the framed photo of the two of them on the mantel.
He thought about everything that had happened since he came home from that business trip.
He had discovered his wife was abusing their daughter.
He had fought to protect Gracie.
And he had won — at least for now.
It hadn’t been easy. There were still difficult days ahead. But for the first time in a long time, Sawyer felt like he was doing the right thing.
He picked up his phone and sent a short message to Mrs. Kennedy.
Thank you. For everything.
She replied almost immediately.
She deserves to be safe. You both do.
Sawyer smiled faintly.
Then he turned off the lights and went to check on his daughter one last time before going to bed.
Gracie was sleeping peacefully, her stuffed rabbit tucked under her arm.
Sawyer stood in the doorway for a moment, watching her.
