Chapter 3: The Confrontation
They returned home from the hospital late that night.
The doctor had confirmed what Sawyer already suspected — Gracie’s injury was consistent with being pushed or slammed into a hard surface. They took photos of the bruise and filed a report with Child Protective Services.
When they walked through the front door, Caroline was waiting in the living room.
She stood up immediately.
“Well?” she demanded. “What did the doctor say?”
Sawyer looked at her for a long moment before answering.
“They said the bruise on her back is from being pushed into something hard. They also said it looks like it happened more than once.”
Caroline’s face twisted.
“I already told you — she fell! She’s clumsy!”
Sawyer’s voice remained calm, but there was steel underneath it.
“Gracie told me you pushed her into the closet after she spilled water. She said you grabbed her arm and she hit her back on the metal bar.”
Caroline let out a bitter laugh.
“Oh, so now you’re going to believe an eight-year-old over your own wife? She’s just trying to cause trouble because you spoil her too much!”
Sawyer took a step closer.
“Stop blaming our daughter for what you did.”
Caroline’s expression changed. The fake anger dropped, replaced by something colder.
“You’re really going to do this?” she asked. “You’re going to destroy this family over one little bruise?”
Sawyer looked her straight in the eyes.
“You destroyed this family the moment you put your hands on our daughter.”
Caroline’s face flushed with rage.
“If you try to take her away from me, I’ll make sure you regret it. I’ll tell everyone you’re an absent father who’s never home. I’ll say you’re trying to turn Gracie against me!”
Sawyer didn’t raise his voice.
“You can say whatever you want,” he replied. “But I have photos from the hospital. I have Gracie’s statement. And I have a feeling there’s more evidence out there than you realize.”
Caroline’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?”
Sawyer didn’t answer.
Instead, he turned and walked toward Gracie’s room to check on her.
As he passed the window, he saw Mrs. Kennedy still standing by her fence, watching their house.
Whatever she knew, Sawyer was going to find out.
