Chapter 12: Gracie’s Healing

Gracie’s therapy sessions were helping.
At first, she had been quiet and withdrawn during the sessions. But over time, she started opening up more. She talked about how scared she used to feel when her mother got angry. She talked about the guilt she carried, believing that the abuse was somehow her fault.
Her therapist, Dr. Ramirez, was patient and kind. She helped Gracie understand that what happened was never her fault.
One evening after therapy, as Sawyer was driving them home, Gracie spoke from the backseat.
“Dr. Ramirez said something today that made me feel better.”
“What did she say?” Sawyer asked, glancing at her in the rearview mirror.
“She said that sometimes grown-ups make bad choices because they’re hurting inside. But that doesn’t mean the kids did anything wrong.”
Sawyer nodded.
“That’s true.”
Gracie was quiet for a few seconds before continuing.
“I used to think that if I was quieter or cleaner, Mom wouldn’t get so mad. But Dr. Ramirez said that’s not how it works. Mom’s anger wasn’t my job to fix.”
Sawyer felt a lump form in his throat.
“You’re very smart, Gracie.”
She smiled shyly.
“I’m trying to believe it.”
When they got home, Gracie went to her room to play. Sawyer stood in the kitchen for a long time, thinking about how far his daughter had come in just a few months.
She still had bad days sometimes. There were still nights when she had nightmares. But she was healing.

Sawyer was incredibly proud of her.
