Chapter 9: The Custody Battle
Two weeks later, Sawyer and Caroline stood in front of a family court judge for a temporary custody hearing.
Sawyer’s lawyer presented the hospital reports, the video from Mrs. Kennedy, and Gracie’s own statement to Child Protective Services.
Caroline’s lawyer tried to argue that it was an isolated incident and that Caroline was a good mother who had simply made a mistake under stress.
The judge was not convinced.
After reviewing all the evidence, she ruled in Sawyer’s favor.
“Given the severity of the injury and the clear evidence of physical abuse, temporary sole custody of Gracie Owens will be granted to her father, Sawyer Owens. Ms. Caroline Owens will have supervised visitation only, pending the outcome of the full investigation and criminal proceedings.”
Caroline burst into tears in the courtroom.
Sawyer felt no satisfaction — only relief.
After the hearing, as they walked out of the courthouse, Caroline grabbed his arm.
“Please, Sawyer,” she begged. “Don’t do this. She’s my daughter too. I made a mistake. People make mistakes!”
Sawyer looked at her calmly.
“You didn’t make a mistake, Caroline. You made a choice. And now you have to live with the consequences.”
He gently removed her hand from his arm.

As he walked away, Caroline stood frozen in the hallway, watching the man she had once been married to take away the one thing she had tried so hard to control.
