Chapter 6: The Video

Sawyer sat at the kitchen table long after Gracie had fallen asleep. The house was quiet, but his mind was anything but.
Mrs. Kennedy’s phone was still in his hand. He had watched the video three times already, and each time it made him feel physically sick.
The footage was clear.
It showed Caroline standing in Gracie’s bedroom, yelling at their daughter. Gracie had spilled water on the floor. Caroline grabbed her arm hard, shook her, then pushed her forcefully toward the closet. Gracie stumbled and hit her back against the metal clothing rod with a sickening thud before falling to the floor, crying in pain.
Caroline didn’t comfort her.
Instead, she pointed a finger at Gracie and said loudly:
“If you tell your father about this, I will destroy this family. Do you understand me? This is your fault.”
Sawyer paused the video and closed his eyes.
His hands were shaking.
He had spent the last five days away on business, trusting that his wife would take care of their daughter. Instead, she had hurt her — and then tried to silence her with threats.
He saved a copy of the video to his own phone and sent the original back to Mrs. Kennedy with a short message thanking her.
Then he sat in the dark living room for a long time, thinking.
He had always tried to be a good husband and father. He worked hard, provided for his family, and tried to keep the peace. But he could no longer ignore what was happening under his own roof.
Caroline had crossed a line that could never be uncrossed.
Sawyer made his decision.
