What She Traced

It started with whispers.

Maya’s mother called her in tears two days after the filing. Someone had sent her screenshots of old social media posts Maya had made during her pregnancy — carefully chosen ones where she looked tired or emotional. The caption underneath read: Postpartum mental health crisis?

Diane had posted a long, emotional message in a private family group about how “worried” she was for her son and granddaughter because “Maya hasn’t been herself since the baby.”

Eric’s sister texted Maya directly: You’re really doing this? After everything Mom and Eric have done for you?

Maya read the messages without replying.

Then came the more serious attack.

Elena called her that afternoon.

“Child Protective Services received an anonymous report this morning,” she said. “Someone claimed you’re unstable and possibly a danger to the baby. They want to do a welfare check.”

Maya closed her eyes.

Of course they had.

“They won’t find anything,” Elena continued. “But this is their opening move. They’re trying to paint you as the unstable one so that when we go to court, they can argue for shared custody or even primary custody with Eric.”

Maya was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, “Send me the name of the CPS worker. I’ll handle the meeting myself.”

“Maya—”

“I know how to document things,” Maya said calmly. “Let them come.”

That evening, two social workers arrived at her apartment. Maya let them in, answered every question clearly, and showed them the organized folder she had prepared — medical records, photos of Lily in the NICU, and a timeline of events. She did not cry. She did not get defensive. She simply presented facts.

When they left, one of the social workers paused at the door.

“Someone really doesn’t like you,” she said quietly.
