Chapter 12: The Reckoning

The conference room at Elena Vargas’s firm was cold and brightly lit. Maya sat on one side of the long table with Elena beside her. Across from them sat Eric, his lawyer, and Diane.

Diane looked smaller than Maya remembered. She kept twisting the strap of her handbag in her lap. Eric’s jaw was tight, the way it always got when he was trying not to lose control.

Elena slid a thick folder across the table.

“This,” she said calmly, “is everything we have compiled over the past three weeks. Bank records. Transfer histories. Shell company documentation. Voice recordings. And evidence linking payments to Victor Hale — a man currently under federal investigation.”

Eric’s lawyer picked up the folder and began flipping through the pages. His expression changed quickly.

Diane leaned over to look. Her face went pale.

“You can’t prove any of this,” Eric said, but his voice lacked conviction.

“We can,” Maya answered. Her voice was quiet but steady. “I’ve been tracing money for a living for eight years. You were never very careful, Eric. And neither was your mother.”

Diane’s head snapped up. “How dare you—”

“Enough,” Eric’s lawyer said sharply. He turned to Eric. “We need to talk privately.”

Elena spoke before anyone could stand. “There’s more. If this goes to court, we will also be presenting evidence of financial misconduct that could interest the SEC. That would turn this from a divorce into a criminal matter.”

The room went very quiet.

Diane’s hands were shaking now. She looked at Eric, then at Maya.

“You would destroy your own family?” she asked, her voice thin.

Maya met her eyes without blinking.

“You tried to destroy mine first,” she said. “I’m simply finishing what you started.”

Eric’s lawyer closed the folder slowly.

“We’ll need time to review this,” he said.

Elena nodded. “You have forty-eight hours. After that, we file everything.”

Maya stood up. She didn’t look at Eric or Diane again. She simply walked out of the conference room with Elena beside her.

For the first time in weeks, she felt like she could breathe.
