Chapter 4: The Lie Unravels

Diane came to the hospital the next day wearing a new dress and carrying a small bouquet of pink roses.

Maya watched her from the bed without speaking.

“Oh, sweetheart,” Diane said, sitting down and reaching for Maya’s hand. “You gave us such a fright. But everything’s going to be fine now. Eric and I have been talking. We think it’s best if we handle the finances for a while. You need to focus on healing and on the baby.”

Maya looked at her mother-in-law’s perfectly manicured nails resting on her own bruised wrist.

“You already took the delivery money,” she said quietly.

Diane’s smile flickered, then returned. “That was for the family. You understand. Eric is under so much pressure at work. A good wife supports her husband.”

“A good mother protects her child,” Maya answered.

Diane’s eyes hardened for a fraction of a second before the tears appeared on cue. “I can’t believe you would say something so cruel after everything I’ve done for this family.”

Maya didn’t answer. She simply watched.

When Diane finally left, Maya opened her phone again. She had already started a new folder on her cloud drive titled simply Evidence.

Inside it she placed the screenshots, the transfer records, and a short voice memo she had recorded while Diane spoke — the app running quietly on the bedside table.

She named the file Diane – Hospital Visit – Day 3.

Then she opened the note where she kept her growing list and added one more line at the bottom.

Diane is not just greedy. She is coordinating.

Maya set the phone down and closed her eyes.
