Chapter 15: What She Traced

Lily came home on a warm Tuesday afternoon.

She was still small, still needed extra care, but she was breathing on her own and gaining weight. Maya carried her into the apartment in a car seat, set her gently on the sofa, and just looked at her for a long time.

The tiny girl who had stopped moving in the water was now home.

Safe.

Maya’s phone buzzed with a message from Elena.

Eric signed everything this morning. The asset freeze is in place. Diane has already moved out of her house. They’re done fighting.

Maya read the message twice, then put the phone down.

She walked over to the bassinet and looked down at her daughter. Lily’s eyes were open, unfocused but calm.

“I traced every dollar they took,” Maya said softly. “I followed the money until there was nowhere left for them to hide. And now it’s over.”

She reached down and gently touched Lily’s cheek.

“I don’t know what kind of mother I’ll be,” she continued. “But I know I’ll never let anyone take from you again. Not your safety. Not your future. Not your peace.”

Lily made a small sound and turned her head toward Maya’s hand.

Maya smiled — a real smile, the first one that reached her eyes in a long time.

She had lost a husband. She had lost the family she thought she had. But she had gained something far more valuable.

She had learned exactly what she was capable of when everything that mattered was on the line.

And she had won.

Maya sat down beside the bassinet and watched her daughter sleep.

Outside, the afternoon light was soft and golden.

Inside, for the first time in months, the apartment felt like home.
