Chapter 11: The Evidence

Rachel came over that weekend with two external hard drives and a thick folder.

“I found more,” she said as soon as Maya let her in. “Victor Hale isn’t just an old friend. He’s been receiving regular payments from one of Eric’s business accounts for the past eleven months. And guess who introduced Eric to the investment opportunity that started all of this?”

Maya already knew the answer. “Diane.”

Rachel nodded. “She set up the initial meeting. The money going to Victor appears to be kickbacks for steering clients toward a particular investment firm — one that’s currently under investigation by the SEC for fraud.”

Maya stared at the documents.

This was bigger than she had realized.

Eric and Diane weren’t just stealing from her. They were involved in something that could bring serious legal consequences if exposed.

Rachel watched her face. “What do you want to do with this?”

Maya closed the folder slowly.

“We give Elena everything,” she said. “And then we wait.”

She looked toward the small bassinet she had already set up in the corner of the living room, even though Lily was still in the hospital.

“They wanted to take everything from us,” Maya said quietly. “Now they’re going to find out what it feels like when someone takes it all back.”

Rachel didn’t answer.

She simply placed the hard drives on the table between them.

Maya reached for her phone and sent Elena a single message:

I have more. Much more. We need to meet tomorrow.

May you like

Then she put the phone down and went to the kitchen to make tea.

Her hands were steady.
