Chapter 1: The Robe

The heat was brutal that afternoon, but Maya Brooks kept the thick white bathrobe wrapped tightly around her body. Even though sweat was sliding down her back and her skin felt like it was burning beneath the fabric, she refused to take it off. Not yet.

The backyard of their suburban home was packed with nearly two hundred people. Classmates, neighbors, and friends of the family filled every corner of the patio and lawn. Music blasted from large speakers near the pool, and the smell of grilled food mixed with chlorine and sunscreen. On the surface, it looked like the perfect eighteenth birthday party.

It wasn’t.

At the center of everything stood her identical twin sister, Chloe.

Chloe wore a bright pink bikini that showed off her smooth, flawless skin. She moved through the crowd like she owned it, laughing loudly, posing for photos, and soaking up every bit of attention. People naturally gravitated toward her. They always had.

Maya stood on the opposite side of the patio, alone.

They were wearing the exact same bikini underneath. Chloe had insisted on it that morning, saying it would be “cute” if they matched for once. Maya had agreed, mostly because she didn’t want another fight. But she had kept the robe on all afternoon, even as the sun beat down mercilessly.

She knew what would happen if she took it off.

Suddenly, a sharp burst of microphone feedback cut through the music. Chloe stood on the small wooden deck near the pool, holding a wireless microphone with a bright, sugary smile on her face.

“Maya!” she called out, her voice sweet but carrying clearly across the yard. “You’ve been hiding under that robe all afternoon. You’re making everyone uncomfortable.”

A few people nearby laughed.

Chloe pointed directly at her.

“We agreed we’d match today, remember? So take it off and come swim with us. Or are you too embarrassed to let everyone see what you really look like?”

One of Chloe’s friends started clapping slowly. Mockingly.

Then another joined in.

Within seconds, the entire backyard was chanting.

“Take it off!”
“Take it off!”
“Take it off!”

Maya felt her stomach twist. Through the glass doors leading into the house, she saw her father standing there, gripping the handle like he was ready to burst outside and stop everything. Their eyes met for a brief second. She gave him the smallest shake of her head.

No.

Not this time.

She had spent twelve years hiding. Twelve years wearing long sleeves in summer, avoiding pools and beaches, and letting people think she was just shy or insecure. She was done.

Every step toward Chloe felt heavier than the last. Phones were already lifted, recording what everyone expected to be the most humiliating moment of her life. Chloe’s smile grew wider with every step Maya took. She looked confident. Victorious.

Maya stopped a few feet away and looked directly into her sister’s eyes.

Then she slowly untied the belt of her robe.

The knot came loose.

The thick white fabric slipped from her shoulders and fell silently onto the stone patio.

A wave of shocked gasps rippled across the entire yard.

Someone dropped a glass. It shattered against the pool deck, but no one moved to clean it up.

The chanting stopped instantly.

The laughter died.

Deep, angry scars stretched across Maya’s shoulders, down both arms, along her ribs, and across part of her back. They were thick, raised, and impossible to ignore — a permanent map of old pain that no one in this backyard had ever seen before.

For several long seconds, no one spoke.

Maya calmly reached down, picked up the microphone that had fallen from Chloe’s hand, and brought it to her lips.

“These scars,” she said, her voice steady even though her heart was pounding, “are the only reason my sister is alive today.”

A stunned silence followed.

Through the glass doors, Maya saw her mother cover her mouth, tears already streaming down her face. Her father had lowered his head, unable to look at anyone.

Chloe’s smile had completely vanished. Her face had gone pale. She took one small step backward, then another, until her legs seemed to give out and she slowly sank to her knees on the wooden deck.

For the first time in years, Chloe Brooks looked afraid.

Maya tightened her grip on the microphone. Her voice remained calm, but there was steel underneath it now.

May you like

“And that’s not even the biggest secret our family has been hiding.”

Every single person in the backyard stood frozen, phones still raised, eyes wide, waiting for what she would say next.
