Chapter 15: The Scars We Hide

Three months later, Maya stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom.
She was getting ready for her first day of college. She wore a simple white t-shirt that showed her arms. The scars were still there — impossible to miss — but she no longer felt the need to hide them.
Chloe had moved out two weeks earlier.
She had decided to live with their aunt in another state, far away from the town that now knew too much about her. Before she left, she had come to Maya’s room one last time.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever be the person you needed me to be,” Chloe had said quietly. “But I’m going to try to be better than I was.”
Maya hadn’t forgiven her.
But she had nodded.
“I hope you do,” she had replied.
Now, standing alone in her room, Maya touched the raised skin on her shoulder. The scars would always be part of her story. They would always remind her of the day she chose to save someone who later tried to destroy her. They would always remind her of the years she spent in silence.
But they no longer defined her.
She picked up her bag and walked downstairs. Her mother was waiting in the kitchen with a small, nervous smile.
“Ready?” she asked.
Maya nodded.
As she stepped outside into the morning light, Maya took a deep breath.
The scars on her body would never fade completely.
But the ones on her soul — the ones caused by years of silence, betrayal, and forced forgiveness — those were finally beginning to heal.
And for the first time in her life, Maya Brooks was no longer afraid of being seen.
She was no longer afraid of the truth.
She was no longer the girl who hid behind a robe.
May you like
She was simply Maya.
And that was finally enough.
