Chapter 3: The Perfect Twin

The silence after Maya spoke only lasted a few seconds.
Then the backyard exploded into noise.
People were whispering. Some were still recording. Others were staring at Chloe, who remained on her knees on the wooden deck, looking like she might throw up.
Chloe’s best friend, Sophia, was the first to move. She rushed over and tried to pull Chloe up, but Chloe shoved her hand away.
“Stop,” Chloe hissed, her voice shaking. “Just stop.”
She slowly stood up, her legs unsteady. Her eyes were locked on Maya with a mixture of shock, fear, and something that looked dangerously close to hatred.
“You’re lying,” Chloe said, loud enough for people nearby to hear. “You’re making this up because you’re jealous. You’ve always been jealous of me.”
Maya didn’t flinch.
“I didn’t make up the scars,” she replied calmly.
Chloe’s face twisted. She took a step closer, lowering her voice so only Maya could hear.
“You always do this,” she whispered fiercely. “You always find a way to make everything about you. Even on my birthday.”
Maya stared at her sister.
“It’s our birthday, Chloe.”
Chloe’s eyes flashed with something ugly.
“You should have stayed quiet like you always do,” she said. “No one wanted to see that. No one cares about your stupid scars.”
Maya felt something cold settle in her chest.
For years, she had let Chloe win. She had let her take the spotlight, the friends, the praise from their parents. She had stayed in the background because it was easier than fighting.
But something had broken the moment she dropped that robe.
“I’m done staying quiet,” Maya said.
She turned and walked away from Chloe, leaving her sister standing alone on the deck as people continued to stare and whisper.
As Maya passed through the crowd, she could feel the shift in the air. Some people looked at her with pity. Others looked at her with something closer to respect. A few were still recording.
She didn’t care anymore.
When she reached the glass doors, her mother was waiting. Tears were streaming down her face.
“Maya, please,” her mother whispered. “Not here. Not like this.”
Maya looked at her.
“You had twelve years to tell the truth,” she said quietly. “You chose to protect her instead of me. I’m not protecting either of you anymore.”
She walked past her mother and into the house.
Behind her, she could hear Chloe’s voice rising again, trying to regain control of the crowd. But the damage was already done.
