Chapter 14: The Quiet

Two weeks after the party, Maya went to the park near their house.
It was late afternoon, and the sun was beginning to set. She sat on a bench near the small lake and watched children play by the water. For the first time in years, she wasn’t wearing long sleeves. The scars on her arms were visible, but no one stared. No one pointed. People simply walked past, lost in their own worlds.
She thought about Chloe.
Her sister had barely left the house since the video went viral. She spent most of her days in her room, only coming out for meals. The confident, cruel girl who had once commanded every room was gone. In her place was someone small and lost.
Maya didn’t feel triumphant.
She felt strangely empty.
She had spent so long preparing for this moment — the moment when the truth would finally come out. Now that it had, she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to feel. Relief? Anger? Sadness?
Maybe all of it at once.
A small part of her still missed the version of Chloe who used to hold her hand when they were little. The version who had once been her best friend before jealousy and secrets had poisoned everything.
But that version of Chloe was gone.
And Maya was finally allowing herself to grieve the sister she had lost, even while refusing to forgive the one who remained.
As the sun dipped below the trees, Maya stood up and walked home.
