Chapter 9: The Public Backlash

By the end of the week, the video had been viewed over four hundred thousand times.

Comments were pouring in from people Maya didn’t even know. Some were supportive. Many were cruel. But the ones that hurt the most were the ones questioning whether Maya was lying for attention.

Chloe, on the other hand, was unraveling.

She had stopped going to school. She spent most of her time locked in her room, only coming out to scream at their parents or to demand that Maya “fix this.” Her social media accounts, once filled with smiling selfies and party photos, had turned into a war zone. Old classmates were tagging her in the video. Strangers were calling her a monster for what she had done at the party.

Maya watched it all from a distance.

She didn’t post anything. She didn’t defend herself online. She simply observed as the narrative slowly shifted.

One afternoon, she received a message from Sophia, Chloe’s former best friend.

I’m sorry for what we did at the party. I didn’t know about the scars. I feel sick about it. If you ever want to talk, I’m here.

Maya stared at the message for a long time before replying.

Thank you.

That was all she wrote.

Later that evening, Chloe stormed into Maya’s room without knocking. Her eyes were bloodshot and her hair was a mess.

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” she spat. “You’re sitting here like some kind of victim while my entire life falls apart.”

Maya looked up from her laptop.

“I didn’t post the video, Chloe. Someone else did. And maybe if you hadn’t tried to humiliate me in front of two hundred people, none of this would be happening.”

Chloe’s face twisted with rage.

“You think you’re so much better than me now? Just because you have some scars and a sad story? You’re still the same pathetic, attention-seeking loser you’ve always been.”

Maya stood up slowly.

“No,” she said quietly. “I’m not. But you’re still the same person who tried to destroy me just so you could feel powerful for five minutes. And now you’re mad because it backfired.”

Chloe stared at her, breathing hard.

Then, without warning, she grabbed a glass from Maya’s desk and threw it against the wall. It shattered, sending glass flying across the floor.

“I hate you,” Chloe whispered, her voice shaking. “I’ve always hated you.”

Maya didn’t flinch.

“I know,” she said. “And that’s exactly why I stopped protecting you.”

Chloe turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door so hard the walls shook.

May you like

Maya stood among the broken glass and let out a long, slow breath.

For the first time, she truly believed that her sister might be dangerous in ways she had never allowed herself to see before.
