Chapter 7: The Real Monster

Two days later, Maya started digging.
She had always accepted the story her parents told — that the fire had been a terrible accident. That Chloe had been playing with the lighter and things had simply gone wrong. But something about Chloe’s reaction at the party had planted a seed of doubt in her mind.
Why had Chloe been so terrified when Maya revealed the truth?
Why had she looked guilty instead of just shocked?
Maya went down to the basement and found the old box of documents her parents kept. Most of it was useless — old bills, insurance papers, and childhood drawings. But near the bottom, she found a folder labeled with the name of the hospital where she had been treated.
Inside were medical reports from the fire.
Most of it was what she already knew. Third-degree burns. Multiple skin grafts. Months of recovery. But one detail stood out.
According to the initial police report, the fire had started from “an open flame near flammable liquids.” There was no mention of how the flame had been created. But there was a small note at the bottom of one page that caught Maya’s attention.
Witness statement from neighbor: Heard young girl screaming “It was an accident” repeatedly before firefighters arrived.
Maya stared at the note.
She had always assumed the neighbor had heard her screaming. But now, reading it again, she wasn’t so sure.
She closed the folder and leaned back against the wall of the basement.
For twelve years, she had carried the weight of that fire alone. She had let everyone believe she was the one who had been careless. She had protected Chloe without ever questioning whether Chloe deserved that protection.
Now, for the first time, Maya wondered if the fire had really been an accident at all.
Or if her sister had done something far worse than anyone had ever admitted.
She picked up the folder and carried it upstairs.

And this time, she wasn’t going to stay silent about it.
