Chapter 10: What the Child Saved
One year after his release, Gavin stood in the backyard watching Chloe chase fireflies. His mother sat on the porch steps with a cup of tea. The ordinary sounds of a family that had survived filled the air.
Chloe ran up to him with cupped hands and a delighted, secretive smile.
“Look, Daddy! I caught one!”
She opened her hands. The tiny light blinked once and flew away.
Gavin smiled.
“You caught something bigger than that once,” he said.
Chloe looked up at him.
“I just told the truth.”
He knelt down and pulled her into a hug.
“That truth saved my life.”
The night air was warm. The house behind them was filled with light and the smell of dinner. No locked doors. No final meal forms. No countdown.
Chloe rested her head on his shoulder.
“I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too, baby girl. More than anything.”
