Chapter 12: The Courtroom Closure
The final hearing to formally dismiss all charges against Gavin was held three months after his release.
The courtroom was the same one where Chloe had saved him. This time it was filled with reporters and supporters who had followed the case.
Lila sat at the defense table, her eyes downcast. She had pleaded guilty to the lesser charges in exchange for a reduced sentence. She would serve time, but not as much as she deserved.
Gavin sat with Chloe beside him. She held his hand the entire time.
The judge reviewed the new evidence one last time, then looked directly at Gavin.
“Mr. Cole, the State of Texas apologizes for the role it played in your wrongful conviction. You are hereby fully exonerated. All charges are dismissed. You are a free man in every sense of the word.”
The courtroom erupted in applause.
Chloe threw her arms around her father and cried.
Gavin held her and whispered, “We did it, baby girl. We did it.”
Outside the courthouse, the press waited. Gavin gave one short statement.
