Chapter 15: What the Child Saved

One evening, years later, Gavin sat on the porch with Chloe, now a teenager, watching the fireflies dance across the yard.
She leaned her head on his shoulder the way she had when she was small.
“Do you ever think about that day in the prison?” she asked.
“Every day,” Gavin answered. “You saved my life, Chloe. Not just from the execution. From giving up.”
She smiled.
“I just told the truth.”
Gavin pulled her closer.
“That truth changed everything.”
The house behind them was quiet and warm. The family they had fought for was safe. The woman who had tried to destroy them was a distant memory.
Chloe had walked into a prison to say goodbye to her father.
