Chapter 13: The Healing

The healing took time.
Chloe still had nightmares about the prison. Gavin still woke up some nights feeling the weight of the execution date that had once been so close.
They went to therapy together. The therapist helped them talk about the years apart, the fear, the anger, and the love that had kept them fighting.
Gavin got his record expunged. He found steady work. He bought a small house with a backyard where Chloe could play without fear.
One evening Chloe asked him about her mother.
“Do you hate her?”
Gavin thought about the question for a long time.
“I was angry for a long time,” he said. “But hate takes too much energy. I’d rather use that energy to be your dad.”
Chloe nodded and hugged him.
