Chapter 1: The Pen

The night Evelyn Harper became a billionaire, her husband handed her divorce papers beside a cold Thanksgiving turkey and told her his mistress was pregnant.

His mother placed Evelyn’s suitcase on the front porch before the ink had dried.

Grant leaned close, smelling of Savannah’s perfume, and whispered, “Try not to embarrass yourself. You were never built for our world.”

Evelyn looked at the pen beside her untouched wineglass.

She looked at Savannah sitting in her chair.

She looked at the family she had supported for seven years.

Then she signed.

Not because she was broken.

Because forty-three minutes earlier, a Manhattan lawyer had told her she now owned the company that paid everyone in that room.

Rain hit the windows of the Greenwich estate.

Margaret sat at the head of the table like a queen. Grant sat beside Savannah. Charles tapped his wineglass. Lauren scrolled her phone.

They only mentioned Savannah’s pregnancy.

Grant pushed the papers forward. “The settlement is fair.”

Sixty thousand dollars. The old Subaru. Ninety days of health insurance.

Evelyn signed every page in silence.

Grant relaxed.

Margaret breathed easier.

Savannah touched Grant’s sleeve.

Only Charles looked nervous.

Evelyn stood, picked up her coat, and walked into the rain without a word.

Behind her, the family celebrated.

They thought they had won.

They had no idea she had already owned them for forty-three minutes.
