Chapter 5: The First Strike

Evelyn’s first strike was surgical.

She called a special meeting of Harper Maritime’s board the following week. Grant arrived early, prepared with arguments and charm and the assumption that Evelyn would still be the woman who had spent seven years making his life easier.

She was not.

She sat at the head of the table in a quiet black suit and listened while Grant presented a plan to restructure the company under his leadership.

When he finished, she spoke for the first time.

“Harper Maritime will be divested from Voss Meridian at fair market value,” she said. “The proceeds will fund a new charitable foundation for single mothers and children in transitional housing.”

The room went silent.

Grant’s face went white.

Margaret, attending by video, leaned forward.

“You cannot do this.”

Evelyn looked directly at the screen.

“I already have.”

The divestment was legal. The board vote was a formality. The family’s shares, diluted by years of debt and Voss Meridian’s controlling interest, could not stop it.

Grant tried one last time in the hallway after the meeting.

“This is revenge,” he said.

Evelyn stopped and looked at him.

“No,” she said. “This is consequence.”

She walked away without looking back.

Behind her, Grant stood in the corridor of the company his family had once believed they owned, watching the woman he had thrown out walk into an empire that now answered to her.
