Chapter 8: The Legal War
The legal war began the following Monday.
Grant and Margaret filed an emergency motion claiming undue influence, mental incompetence on August Voss’s part, and fraud in the transfer of ownership. They asked the court to freeze all Voss Meridian assets related to Harper Maritime and to block Evelyn from making any decisions until the matter was resolved.
Evelyn’s legal team responded the same day with documentation, witness statements, and a countersuit alleging financial mismanagement of Harper Maritime under Grant’s leadership.
The judge, an older woman who had seen enough wealthy families destroy each other in her courtroom, set an expedited hearing.
In the hallway outside the courtroom, Grant tried one last time.
“We can still fix this,” he said. “A quiet settlement. You keep some shares. We keep the company. No one has to be embarrassed.”
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
“You embarrassed me the night you handed me divorce papers in front of your pregnant mistress,” she said. “The only thing left to be embarrassed about is how long I stayed.”
The hearing was short.
Evelyn’s team presented the will, the medical confirmation of August Voss’s competence, and financial records showing Harper Maritime’s losses under Grant’s leadership. Grant’s team tried to paint Evelyn as an opportunistic outsider who had manipulated a dying man.
The judge ruled in Evelyn’s favor on every major point.
The divestment would proceed.
The countersuit would continue.
Grant left the courthouse with Margaret on his arm, both of them silent.
