Chapter 13: The Heir

Savannah’s son was born in early spring.
Grant sent Evelyn a single message asking if she wanted to meet the child.
Evelyn replied with one line.
Only if the mother agrees and the child is not used as leverage.
Savannah agreed.
The meeting happened in a neutral park on a Saturday afternoon. Savannah looked tired. Grant looked smaller. The baby was small and perfect and had Grant’s eyes.
Evelyn held him for a moment, then handed him back.
“He is not mine,” she said. “But he is innocent. I will not punish him for your choices.”
Grant’s voice was rough. “You could have had this life with me.”
Evelyn looked at him with the calm of someone who had already survived the worst version of that life.
“I could have,” she said. “But I would have remained small. I choose not to be small anymore.”
She walked away without looking back.
