Chapter 3: The Boardroom

Monday morning arrived with clear skies and the kind of silence that precedes a storm.

Evelyn walked into the Voss Meridian boardroom at exactly nine o’clock wearing a simple black suit and the same coat she had worn when Grant handed her the divorce papers. The directors were already seated around the long table, faces expectant, waiting for the announcement of succession after August Voss’s death.

Nathaniel Reeves stood at the head of the table.

“Gentlemen, I present the new controlling shareholder of Voss Meridian Holdings—Evelyn Harper.”

The room went still.

Then erupted.

Voices overlapped. Questions. Demands. One director laughed as if it were a joke. Another demanded proof. A third looked at Evelyn with the calculating expression of a man reassessing risk.

Evelyn remained standing.

She did not raise her voice.

She simply placed the ownership documents on the table and let the signatures speak.

The laughter died.

The questions stopped.

The calculating expressions turned to shock.

One director— an older man with silver hair and a Voss Meridian pin on his lapel—leaned forward.

“You are August’s granddaughter?”

“Yes.”

“And you intend to run the company?”

“I intend to own it,” Evelyn said. “How it is run will depend on who chooses to stay.”

Grant’s name appeared on the attendee list as a representative of Harper Maritime. He had not yet arrived. Evelyn noted the empty chair and felt nothing.

The board meeting continued in stunned silence punctuated by legal confirmations and procedural votes. By the end of the hour, Evelyn was the majority shareholder with voting control.

She stood at the head of the table and looked at each director in turn.

“Harper Maritime will be reviewed for efficiency,” she said. “Any director with conflicting interests should recuse themselves immediately.”

No one moved.

Evelyn nodded once.

“Then we begin.”
