Chapter 12: The Horrifying Truth

The full scope of what Jared had done emerged in the third week of discovery.
It was not only the miscarriage and the sterilization. Elena’s team traced a pattern of contingency planning that stretched back nearly a year. Jared had commissioned a private medical opinion—long before I ever conceived—outlining methods to “manage reproductive outcomes” in the event of an inconvenient pregnancy. He had moved substantial company shares into an offshore trust designed to activate upon the birth of a child with Courtney. Most chilling of all was a draft document, never filed, that outlined a scenario in which I suffered a “tragic decline” after surgery, leaving him free to remarry without a protracted divorce.
I read the pages in Elena’s office while the afternoon light faded.
The man who had held me while I cried over a positive pregnancy test had already been designing my erasure.
Elena watched me carefully. “We can add attempted murder-for-hire investigation to the referral. The language in these drafts is enough to trigger it.”
I closed the folder.
“Do it.”

That night I dreamed of the hospital corridor again. This time I did not stay silent. In the dream I stepped through the door and spoke Jared’s name. He turned, and for a moment the mask slipped completely, showing the calculation underneath. I woke with the taste of metal in my mouth and the certainty that the woman who had once loved him was gone.
In her place was someone who would finish what he had started.
