Chapter 4: The First Quiet Move

Elena arrived the next afternoon while Jared was at the office. She listened without interrupting as I told her everything—the corridor, the order to remove my uterus, the fabricated cancer diagnosis, Courtney’s pregnancy, the way Jared had looked at her while still holding my hand.

When I finished, Elena was silent for a long time.

“Do you have proof beyond your word?” she asked finally.

I placed the phone on the table and played the recording from the hospital room. Jared’s voice filled the quiet kitchen, smooth and concerned, discussing my recovery and the “tragic necessity” of the surgery. Beneath the performance, the audio captured something else: the soft vibration of an incoming text, followed by his low, private laugh—the same laugh he used only with Courtney.

Elena’s expression did not change, but her eyes sharpened.

“There’s more,” I said. I handed her the two sets of medical documents side by side. “And I believe the miscarriage itself may not have been natural. I want everything investigated.”

Elena gathered the papers with careful hands.

“Then we start today,” she said. “And we do not warn him.”

After she left, I sat alone at the kitchen island and stared at the closed nursery door. The hollow place in my abdomen ached with every breath. I placed one palm gently over the surgical scar and made a silent promise to the child I would never hold and the future that had been stolen.

I will not let them win.
