Chapter 14: The Cost
The plea agreement, when it finally came, was not the clean victory some might have imagined.
Jared avoided a full trial by accepting responsibility for the unauthorized sterilization and the falsified medical records. The more serious charges related to the deliberate induction of labor were reduced in exchange for his cooperation against the doctor and the technician who had assisted him. He received a prison sentence measured in years, not decades. Courtney was not charged criminally but lost every professional contract and public alliance she had built. The child she carried would be born into the wreckage of both parents’ choices.
I attended the sentencing hearing. I sat in the back row and watched Jared stand with his head bowed while the judge spoke. When he turned to be led away, his eyes found mine for a single second. There was no tenderness left in them. Only the stunned recognition of a man who had finally run out of control.
I did not look away first.
Outside the courthouse, the air was sharp with coming autumn. Elena walked beside me in silence until we reached the car.
