Chapter 8: The First Strike

I filed the lawsuit on a Monday morning while Jared was in a board meeting.

The complaint was comprehensive: unauthorized sterilization, medical fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and—most damning—wrongful death of an unborn child through deliberate induction. Attached were the mismatched medical records, the consent form analysis, the toxicology findings on the sedative, and the two audio recordings.

By noon the story had not yet reached the press, but it had reached Jared.

He came home white-faced and silent. I was sitting in the living room with a cup of untouched tea when he walked in.

“What have you done?” he asked.

I looked at him the way he had once looked at me in the hospital—calm, distant, already finished.

“I listened,” I said. “In the corridor. And then I kept listening.”

He took a step forward. “Shelby, you don’t understand the damage this will do. To the company. To both of us. To—”

“To your heir?” I finished. “The child you killed my baby to make room for?”

The color drained from his face so completely that for a moment he looked like a stranger.

I stood, collected my coat, and walked past him toward the door.

“My attorney will handle further communication,” I said. “Don’t contact me again.”

I left him standing in the center of the home we had shared, the lawsuit already working its way through the system like a slow, irreversible poison.

Behind me, for the first time, Jared Harlan had nothing left to say.
