Chapter 13: The Public Unraveling

The district attorney filed criminal charges on a Thursday morning: aggravated assault, medical fraud, conspiracy, and, pending further review, charges related to the death of the unborn child.
The news broke within the hour.
Harlan Media’s board placed Jared on immediate leave. The stock collapsed. Courtney’s carefully curated social media went dark after screenshots of the apartment recording began circulating. She released one final statement claiming she had been “misled about the circumstances” of my medical care. No one believed her.

In the evening Elena called.
“They’re offering a global settlement,” she said. “Criminal and civil. Significant financial terms. Full public admission of the unauthorized surgery and the fabricated diagnosis. They want the recordings kept from open court.”
