Chapter 7: The Recording

The concealed audio that would change everything was not the one from the hospital room.
It was a second recording, captured three nights later by a private investigator Elena had placed near Courtney’s apartment. Jared had gone there after telling me he needed to work late. The microphone, hidden in a plant delivered earlier that day, picked up a conversation that went far beyond the affair and the surgery.
Jared’s voice was relaxed, almost proud.
“Once Shelby’s out of the way medically, the board will accept the new succession plan. The shares I moved into the offshore account will transfer cleanly to the child. No one will question a grieving widower who remarries the mother of his heir.”
Courtney laughed softly. “And if she doesn’t stay quiet?”
“She will. She has no proof. And after everything she’s been through, no one will believe her over me.”
There was a pause. Then Jared added the words that made Elena call me at midnight.
“Besides, the first baby was never going to survive. The dosage was calculated carefully. Clean. Untraceable. This way there’s no competition and no messy inheritance questions.”
I listened to the recording twice in Elena’s office while the city lights blurred beyond the windows.
The loss of my child had not been a tragedy.
It had been a strategy.
When the audio ended, Elena placed a hand over mine.
“We have him,” she said. “On the surgery. On the fabrication. On the deliberate termination of your pregnancy. And on intent to remove you permanently from the company and the family line.”

I stared at the small digital recorder.
“Then it’s time he learned what it feels like to lose everything.”
