Chapter 15: New Sunrise

Six months after I carried my feverish son out of that nursery, we stood in our new backyard at dawn.
Lucas was on a blanket in the grass, trying to roll over. Emma sat beside him with her coffee. I stood behind them, one hand on her shoulder.
The sun came up over the trees.
No one was going to hit her again.
No one was going to ignore our son’s fever.
No one was going to lock us in a nightmare and call it family.
I had come home from deployment expecting to hold my son.
Instead, I had to fight for him.
And I would do it again.
Every single time.
Because this—this quiet morning with my wife and my son—was the only family I needed.
The rest of them could keep their version of “respect.”

We had something better.
We had peace.
