Chapter 2: The Drive

I drove straight to the 24-hour urgent care two towns over. The nurse took one look at Lucas and rushed us back. 103.8 fever. Possible sepsis. They started IV antibiotics immediately.

While they worked on my son, I stepped into the hallway and made three calls.

First to my lawyer.
Second to Staff Sergeant Marcus Hale—my best friend and a military police investigator.
Third to Child Protective Services, the caseworker I had already been in contact with for two weeks.

I sent them the link to the encrypted cloud folder I had been building since week three of my deployment.
