Chapter 1: The Message

Kesha Bennett was sitting in her corner office on the 28th floor of a glass tower in downtown Austin when the message arrived.
It was already dark outside. The city lights below looked like scattered stars. She had just finished reviewing the final numbers for her company’s year-end report when her phone lit up.
The name on the screen made her pause.
Marcus Reynolds.
For a moment, she simply stared at it. Eight years had passed since she last heard from him. Eight years since the man who once promised her forever had walked out the moment she told him she was pregnant.
She opened the message.
“Come to Christmas dinner at Mom’s house in Boulder on December 25. The family wants to see you one last time.”
Kesha read it three times.
Then she laughed — a quiet, humorless sound.
She knew exactly what this was.
Marcus still pictured her as the broken twenty-five-year-old he had abandoned. He probably imagined her struggling to pay rent, working some dead-end job, and showing up alone and desperate for family approval. He had no idea what her life had actually become.
Her assistant, Dana, knocked lightly on the open door.
“Kesha? You’re not seriously thinking about going, are you?”
Kesha looked out at the Austin skyline and smiled.
“Oh, I’m definitely going.”
Dana stepped inside, frowning.
“After everything he did? After he left you when you were pregnant? Why would you give him the satisfaction of seeing you?”
Kesha turned her chair to face her assistant.
“Because he still thinks I’m the woman he left behind,” she said calmly. “And I want him to see exactly who I became without him.”
Dana studied her for a moment, then sighed.
“You’re going to make an entrance, aren’t you?”
Kesha’s smile widened.
“The biggest one I can manage.”
She picked up her phone and replied to Marcus with only two words:
“I’ll be there.”
Then she opened her calendar and blocked the entire day.

Eight years ago, Marcus Reynolds had destroyed her.
Now, on Christmas Day, she was going to return the favor — in the most unforgettable way possible.
