Chapter 9: The Public Humiliation

Word spread fast.
By the time dessert was being served, almost everyone in the house knew the full story. Relatives who had once pitied Kesha for being “abandoned and childless” were now whispering about how Marcus had thrown away not one, but four children.
Some of them looked at Kesha with new respect.
Others looked at Marcus with open disappointment.
His mother, Patricia, tried her best to salvage the situation. She moved around the room, trying to change the subject and act like everything was normal. But no one was listening to her anymore.
At one point, an older aunt pulled Kesha aside.
“I always wondered why Marcus never talked about you after the divorce,” the woman said quietly. “Now I understand. He was ashamed.”
Kesha gave her a small smile.
“He should be.”
The woman nodded.
“You did well, dear. Raising four children alone… that takes strength most people don’t have.”
Kesha appreciated the words, but she didn’t need validation from these people. She had already proven herself — to herself and to her children.
Across the room, Marcus sat on the couch looking miserable. His new fiancée had already left with her bags. The engagement ring was nowhere to be seen.
Kesha almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
But then she remembered the eight years of struggle, the sleepless nights, the fear, and the loneliness.
And the pity disappeared.

Now he had to live with the consequences.
