Chapter 4: The Landing

Christmas morning was bright and cold.
The helicopter lifted off from a private helipad in Austin just after 9 a.m. The four children were excited, pressing their faces against the windows as the city disappeared beneath them.
Kesha sat calmly, one hand resting on her lap, watching the landscape change from city to mountains.
As they approached Boulder, snow-covered peaks came into view. Her heartbeat picked up, but it wasn’t fear.
It was anticipation.
At exactly 11:47 a.m., the helicopter descended onto the large front lawn of Patricia Reynolds’ house.
Snow swirled violently as the rotors slowed. The moment the skids touched the ground, the front door of the house flew open.
Patricia Reynolds stepped out first, still holding a wine glass.
Then Marcus appeared behind her, wearing a dark green sweater and looking far more ordinary than Kesha remembered.
And standing beside him was a blonde woman in a bright red dress — his new fiancée.
Kesha stepped out of the helicopter first.
Then came Noah.
Then Ethan.
Then Sophia.
And finally, Olivia.
Four children.
Four perfect, beautiful children who looked undeniably like their father.
The moment Marcus saw them, his entire body went rigid.
His fiancée gasped.
Patricia’s wine glass slipped from her fingers and shattered on the stone steps.
Kesha walked forward calmly, the snow crunching beneath her boots. The children followed close behind her, holding hands.
When she reached the front steps, she stopped and looked directly at the man who had once promised to love her forever.
“Merry Christmas, Marcus,” she said, her voice steady and clear.
Marcus opened his mouth, but no words came out.
His eyes moved from Noah… to Ethan… to Sophia… to Olivia.
Recognition hit him like a physical blow.
His face turned completely white.
The blonde woman beside him took a shaky step backward.
“M-Marcus…” she whispered. “Who are those children?”
Marcus still couldn’t speak.
Kesha rested her hand gently on Olivia’s shoulder and looked straight into the eyes of the man who had abandoned them eight years ago.
“I brought the grandchildren you never knew you had.”
The small black box Marcus had been holding slipped from his fingers and landed in the snow.
His fiancée let out a strangled sound.
Patricia staggered backward and grabbed the doorframe for support.
And then, one of the children — little Olivia — looked up at Marcus with wide, innocent eyes and asked in a sweet, clear voice:
“Are you my daddy?”
The entire front porch went completely silent.
No one moved.
May you like
No one breathed.
Marcus Reynolds stood frozen, staring at the four children he had never known existed… while the woman he had thrown away eight years ago stood calmly in front of him, finally holding all the power.
